APEGBC Continuing Professional Development Bylaw – Background Information
Next week, voting will open for the APEGBC Council election as well as for a bylaw on Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This proposed bylaw would introduce new obligations for undertaking and reporting professional development activities for all professional engineers, professional geoscientists, and licensees registered with APEGBC.
This vote marks a critical time for the professions as a whole as BC engineers and geoscientists decide whether to join their counterparts across the country, and almost all other regulated professions in BC, by demonstrating their commitment to lifelong learning through a formal professional development program.
We encourage all employees who are members of APEGBC to become informed on this important issue and to cast their ballots during the voting period.
What are the program requirements?
The bylaw is intended to be simple, flexible and achievable, not disadvantage any particular group, outline a reasonable level of professional development activity for all practicing members, and maintain a simple reporting mechanism. All practising APEGBC members and licensees will be required to complete an average of 50 hours of professional development per year (150 professional development hours (PDHs) on a three year rolling total), whereby:
·20 PDHs can be completed simply by practicing your profession (where 15 hours of work earns 1 PDH);
·The remaining 30 PDHs can be completed through a combination of activities suited to your needs; and
·15 of the 30 PDHs need to be verifiable (45 of the 150 PDHs on a three year rolling total).
Who must comply?
The bylaw applies to all registered members and licensees with practice rights.
Individuals who indicate compliance with the CPD requirements of another professional regulatory body (program must be approved in advance by APEGBC Council) will be considered compliant with APEGBC’s program requirements.
Exemptions:
·Members who have non-practicing status
·Members in training (EIT and GIT)
·Members not working due to health or disability reasons, on parental leave, or other legitimate reasons will be able to apply for special consideration for a full or partial exemption.
